Music and Drama Libraries

My paper investigates the problems and opportunities for manager and user of a library housing both drama and music materials. The paper is based upon information gathered from the three principal music and drama colleges in the UK: The Guildhall School, The Royal Scottish Academy and the Welsh College. A brief summary is given of the history, nature and location of each institution and the differences in the courses offered.
The ways in which the libraries of each college have solved the problems of handling materials relating to the two disciplines of drama and music are discussed. Of particular concern are the staffing, accommodation, and budgetary implications of dealing with the two disciplines, and the degree of collaboration between the three institutions. For two of the colleges, geographical proximity is a more significant factor in determining collaborative ventures between libraries. Observations are made about the benefits to the users of the two-discipline library, based partly upon information gathered from user surveys and partly upon the experience of staff.
