From the Genoan archives the reconstruction of the musical life
of the town in the 16.th-17.th centuries
The history of the Genoan music in the 16th-17th centuries is still for
many people a disregarded and badly known reality. Nevertheless, since
some years, it is the subject of the study of scholars who have with
their work revealed the fertile substrate that has produced fruits like
Simone Molinaro or Nicolò Paganini.
Within the sphere of this studies, the archival research has had a fundamental role.
The documents that have contributed to the reconstruction of the life of
the town are disseminated all over the rows and the registers of the
Genoan archives. From the parish archives, and particularly from the
registers of the deaths, it has been possible to define biographical
details of two of the more important composers active in Genova (Dalla
Gostena and Molinaro); from the Archivio Capitolare of San Lorenzo, from
the archive of the "Padri del Comune" and from the State archive it has
been possible to reconstruct the musical history of the town, getting
to the heart of the musical custom and lighting up aspects that are
apparently fringe (contracts, rules, sanctions regarding musicians), but
that reveal the concrete context in which single musicians operated and
expressed their individual values.
The most relevant news have concerned the history of the two
institutions of the city promoting music during the two centuries: the
choir of San Lorenzo (founded in 1517 thanks to the contribution of
Lorenzo Fieschi and substantially linked to the Cathedral) and the
musical chapel of the palace, founded in 1540 and employed for the
service of the Doge.
Other determinant documents have been those concerning the history of
music instrument making, of musical typography and those related to the
activity and biography of non-Genoan composers, instrumentalists and
singers active in Genoa (like Vincenzo Ruffo, Ferdinando Pagano,
Francesco Guami, Andrea Falconieri, Pier Simone Agostini) and Genoan
ones active, besides their native town, also in Italian and European
courts (like Giovanni Battista Dalla Gostena, Simone Molinaro, Carlo
Abbate, Francesco Tagliavacca, Giovanni Agostino Ponsello, Paolo
Francesco Bordigone).
Vincenzo Ruffo, Ferdinando Pagano, Francesco Guami, Andrea Falconieri,
Gostena, Simone Molinaro, Carlo Abbate, Francesco Tagliavacca, Giovanni
Agostino Ponsello et Paolo Francesco Bordigone).
