Sources for Arrigo Boito's Nerone
Fifty years passed from the first piece of news on Boito's project for
his second and last opera, that he left incomplete only about the
orchestration, to the author's death. During this very long period of
time Boito stored up a considerable quantity of preparatory material,
that came out either from his personal creativity or from the most
important historical works, ancient and modern, regarding the life of
the Roman Emperor and his times (including first Christian uses, customs
and rites) and other many literary sources.
An incomplete but very rich collection of this material is today kept in
Parma, at the Conservatory "Arrigo Boito", where a room reproduces
exactly Boito's study in Milan. This material has been roughly numbered
by pencil, certainly not by Boito himself, and anyway up to today it has
not been properly catalogued so that to be easily examined. To about
these four thousand "carte", besides absolutely diverse in size and
content, numerous notes are to be added, together with a proper treatise
on harmony.
The presentation will deal with the content of this material and will
also explain how this material joined in the libretto and thus in the
score of Nerone. The problems that the presenter is encountering with
cataloguing the material itself and the software support used will be
described.

Cinquante-six ans passèrent entre la première nouvelle sur le projet du
Nerone et la mort de Boito, qui laissa incomplète l'orchestration de son
deuxième et dernier opéra. Dans le cours des années, Boito accumula une
grande quantité de materiel préparatoire. Une riche - même si
incomplète - récolte de ces documents se trouve aujourd'hui au
Conservatoire "Arrigo Boito" de Parme. Le materiel n'a pas encore été
catalogué. Le rapport aura pour objet une description du materiel e de
son emploi pendant la rédaction du libretto et de la partition. Le
rapporteur donnera aussi communication sur les problèmes et sur la
méthode du catalogage du matériel.

Vor der ersten Nachricht über das Projekt des Nerone bis zum Tod Boitos,
zu dessen Zeitpunkt die Orchestration seiner zweiten und letzten Oper
noch immer unvollständig war, vergingen sechsundfünfzig Jahre. In diesem
langen Zeitraum trug Boito eine beachtliche Menge von Skizzen und
vorebereitendem Material zusammen. Eine sehr umfangreiche - wenn auch
nicht vollständige - Sammlung dieser Materialien befindet sich heute im
Konservatorium "Arrigo Boito" in Parma. Diese Materialien sind jedoch
noch nicht katalogisiert. Dieser Aufsatz will beschrieben, auf welche
weise diese Materialien Eingang erst in das Libretto und dann in die
Partitur gefunden haben. Darüberhinaus soll Einblick gegeben werden in
die Methoden und die Schwierigkeiten bei der Katalogisierung von Boitos
Materialien.
