How can you become a music librarian in Italy?
The profession of librarian today must have to do with the book "under a
form of conflict", of a book not as a "thing" or "material object"
anymore, but a "living function" (José Ortega y Gasset). This is the
starting point to define the profession of librarian.
Italy is certainly not a model of reference for the training of a
librarian, but it has partly provided with the general cultural training
which the Italian school is still able to give.
In Italy, apart from a special school for archivists and librarians, a
two year course for a Diploma at the Rome University, there are courses
for degrees in Conservazione dei Beni Culturali (Preservation of
Cultural Heritage), more oriented toward the history and theories of
book instruction rather than toward a professional activity.
Although Italy has a remarkable number of libraries and an extraordinary
patrimony of books, it does not require employees to have a specific
schooling, in that it does not consider that of the librarian as a real
scientific profession: the librarian is considered a skilled worker. The
consequence is that with great expenditure there are minimum services.
The debate on the training of a librarian, begun in the mid-nineteenth
century, has only produced particular schools, but not yet a regular
course for a degree. Moreover, the degree in Conservazione dei Beni
Culturali, after 10 years, has had no legal recognition to have access
to a career as yet neither by the Ministero dei Beni Culturali, nor by
local Bodies (Regions, Provinces, Municipalities), because it is
considered not in keeping with requirements of the profession. This lack
of professionality, not required, leads to lack of being capable to
evaluate results, to planning and to correction.
Only with the collaboration between Universities et Libraries will it be
possible to achieve an adequate arrangement of the sector, but they are
still two worlds apart and the debate is still open.
ausgeschlossen.
